Ceramsite, as its name suggests, refers to ceramic granules. Most ceramsite particles have a round or oval spherical shape; however, some crushed ceramsite particles are irregularly shaped rather than spherical. The shape of ceramsite varies depending on the manufacturing process. Its surface is covered with a hard shell, which can be either ceramic or glazed, providing waterproof and air-retentive properties while enhancing the strength of the ceramsite. The color of ceramsite varies according to the raw materials used and the manufacturing process. Fired ceramsite is typically dark red or ochre red, though some special varieties may appear grayish-yellow, grayish-black, grayish-white, or bluish-gray.
The particle size of ceramsite generally ranges from 5 to 20 mm, with larger particles up to 25 mm. Ceramsite is commonly used as a replacement for gravel and pebbles in concrete.
